This came about when he auditioned in Pilsen for Alfred Grünfeld, who was so impressed that he recommended Serkin study with Robert in Vienna.〔Lehmann & Faber, p. 19〕 Serkin made his debut with the Vienna Symphony at age 12, playing the Mendelssohn G minor Concerto,〔(Jeremy Siepmann ); Retrieved 28 August 2013〕 but his family refused invitations for him to tour, in favour of continuing his studies with Robert.〔(James Gollin, ''Pianist: A Biography of Eugene Istomin'' ); Retrieved 28 August 2013〕 He had at least one more lesson with Robert long after he had become an established concert pianist.〔Lehmann & Faber, p. 24〕 The conductor Kurt Adler was initially a piano student of Robert's, and he dedicated his book ''The Art of Accompanying and Coaching'' to all the great musical influences of his life, including Professor Richard Robert.〔(springer.com ); Retrieved 28 August 2013〕〔(Václav Urban, ''Kurt Adler (1907 Neuhaus – 1977 New York)'' (in Czech) ); Retrieved 28 August 2013〕 His assistants included Anka Bernstein-Landau〔(paullustigdunkel.com ); Retrieved 28 August 2013〕 and his former student Vally Weigl.〔(composers.com ); Retrieved 28 August 2013〕〔(Karl Weigl Foundation ); Retrieved 28 August 2013〕 Richard Robert also composed himself.
